Great news from our former home of Massachusetts

Lina and I were proud to be traveling in Boston (where we met and once lived) shortly after the  Massachusetts Legislature passed the Transgender Equal Rights Bill, joining 15 other states and the District of Columbia in extending much-needed protection to transgender residents in employment, housing, education, credit, and hate crimes.  Governor Patrick Duval, a long-time supporter, signed the bill into law last week. Here’s some information about the bill from Mass Equality, a group instrumental in helping its passage.

When Lina and I tell people how welcoming her workplace was after her transition, many assume that’s because they legally had to be under federal law. And when I tell them no such law exists, they’re always surprised. Adding protection state by state is a good start, but of course a federal law is key.
